Electrons

This new page is contributed to the mesh of random facts floating around out there.
I will be posting weekly 'factoids'. Factoids are random, semi-useless facts that you never knew you needed to know.
But I'm calling them "Electrons" to go along with the whole atom thing.
Tell you what, I'll give this page a boost with bonus five electrons, just to get things started....

ELECTRON # 1:
Mayan prisoners where painted with black and white stripes.

ELECTRON # 2:
The longest word in Shakespear is honorificabilitudinatibus, which means "the state of being able to achieve honors" as quoted from Wikipedia.

ELECTRON # 3:
Scientists are currently breeding glowworms to produce colored silk, thus not having to die the silk threads later on.

ELECTRON # 4:
The largest string instrument is the Octobass, about 10 feet tall. You need to stand on a stool and press levers to finger because the strings are so thick. Anyone know where you could get lessons?

ELECTRON # 5:
The violin and cello are proportionately correct as relative to the pitches that it was designed to produce - both the viola and bass are incorrectly proportioned, but one would not be able to play a correctly sized viola on one's shoulder.
(And yeah, the Octobass is a correctly sized bass.)

ELECTRON # 6:
The oldest wombat lived to be 34 years old.

ELECTRON # 7:
VIOLAS ARE BIGGER THAN VIOLINS!!!!! :)

ELECTRON # 8:
Suk, Dvorak, and Smetana were all Czech composers!
Dvorak in all his glory
ELECTRON # 9:
Clarissa watches inappropriate videos about subjects such as "Vegetable Doom and ****"
tsk tsk, clarissa.

ELECTRON #10:
Red-tinted chicken eye glasses were used in the 20th century to stop chickens from seeing blood on other chickens and eating each other. Patented in 1903.

ELECTRON # 11:
Did you know that the average high temperature of Prague in January is 33.8 degrees?

ELECTRON # 12:
A minnow is not a plant.
Or a rock.
It is a fish.

ELECTRON # 13: Yuna Kim won a gold medal and the world record in women's figure skating in 2010, at age 19. She won the women's figure skating World Championship the year before.

ELECTRON # 14: In the holocaust, while jews wore yellow stars, gay people wore upside down pink triangles on their clothes.

ELECTRON # 15: Those pink triangles are used to mark books in the LGBT section of the Fulton County Public library (and yes, that section is in the library)

ELECTRON # 16: Fulton Public Library has an LGBT section in their branch! Good for them....

ELECTRON # 17: Only one of your ovaries functions each month. They switch off.

ELECTRON # 18: Most kittens are lactose intolerant... most cats actually. It gives them cramps and diarrhea.

ELECTRON # 19: Sisal rope is made from the fibers of this palm-tree thing found in tropical areas.

ELECTRON # 20: My kittens use low pitch trills to communicate or call for each other and only use high squeaks and slides to get our attention.

ELECTRON # 21: Chihuahuas are rather tiring to walk in a park at 8 o'clock at night.

ELECTRON # 22: It's the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge this weekend!

ELECTRON # 23: Japan town paper goodies are school supply geek HEAVEN. Staple-free staplers, patterned tape, thousands of cool notebooks and binders, little stationary constructions, cool pens, epic erasers, and PAPERCLIPS SHAPED LIKE HIPPOS.
[Man, you cannot believe the self restraint it took not to buy many small tins of animal shaped paper clips - for $11 each. :( Not even the hippos...]

Okay, so above are the actual hippo clip containers, accompanied by actual hippo clips. Right next to this caption are hippo clips that I have never seen before in my life, but they were so freaking epic that I had to put them on here anyways. :)

ELECTRON # 24: Korean barbecue is delicious!

ELECTRON # 25: Sauron (from LOTR) was a minor god - the devoted servant to Morgoth (the most powerful, ambitious, and evil of all the Gods). When Morgoth fell, he took his place trying to control Middle Earth. This doesn't actually come up in the trilogy, or the Hobbit. Of course, Sauron is not involved in the Hobbit at all.

ELECTRON # 26: Sauron was also called Annatar and Mairon.

ELECTRON # 27: Boxes of Grapefruit in Texas weigh an average of 80 pounds.
ELECTRON # 28: Orange and tangerine boxes in Arizona cost the same! Lemon boxes are worth one dollar more.

ELECTRON # 29: White Grapefruit cost 13 cents more per pound than red grapefruit!

ELECTRON # 30: All grapefruits averaged together cost $2.24 per box and 49 cents per pound.

ELECTRON # 31: Hyperbolic planes have two holes.

ELECTRON # 32: On July 4th, the Higgs particles called Bosons were official-ized!

ELECTRON # 33: My uncle is 2.7 percent Neanderthal.
 vs

ELECTRON # 34: If my uncle is 2.7% Neanderthal, that's enough neanderthal to make one of his ancestors a complete Neanderthal 6 generations back.

ELECTRON # 35: Woa... realized I haven't done anything here in forever. I'll try not to let it die! I'll try to think of ten that I'll add on next Sunday. Hopefully I can maintain some sense of dignity here. Fighting!

That's it for now! Thanks for joining me for this week's ELECTRONS!
